Country Music Christmas Movie Round-up: Ring in the Holidays with Reba, Scotty McCreery, Jana Kramer and more

Reba McEntire, Jana Kramer and more star in new Christmas movies this year. And, we round up a few classics and tell you where to find them.

Country music and Christmas goes together like milk and cookies. Some of the genre's biggest stars stepped up this year and joined a slew of heartwarming holiday movies. Not to be discounted, there are decades of country music Christmas movies to dust off over the holiday season, too. Here's a wrap-up of country Christmas flicks to come as well few favorites from over the years.

Reba McEntire and John Schneider will star in the new Lifetime Christmas movie "Christmas in Tune" on Friday.

“Christmas in Tune” with Reba McEntire and John Schneider

McEntire and Schneider, most known for playing Bo Duke in hit television series “The Dukes of Hazzard,” co-star in the new Lifetime Christmas movie “Christmas In Tune” that debuts 8 p.m. /7 p.m. central Friday on Lifetime.

In the movie, McEntire’s character Georgia and Schneider’s Joe are an estranged couple and singing duo who reunite to play their daughter Belle’s (played by Candice King) Christmas charity concert. True to the Christmas spirit, the characters get back together – on and off the stage – by the end of the feel-good holiday flick.

“Five More Minutes” produced by Scotty McCreery

McCreery’s sentimental chart-topper “Five More Minutes” is the inspiration for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries television movie “Five More Minutes” that will have multiple encore showings on the network as part of their Miracles of Christmas celebration.

“Five More Minutes” was written by Nikki Deloach and Megan McNulty and stars Deloach and David Haydn-Jones. In the film, a woman’s Christmas wish is answered when her late grandfather’s journal turns up and reveals a secret romance.

“They own the Christmas season,” McCreery says of Hallmark. “We’ve been in talks with them for a while. They heard the song and loved the song, and wanted to find a way to incorporate it into a movie. It’s a cool way; they’re taking the grandfather theme, which is how ‘Five More Minutes’ got started.”

“The Holiday Fix-Up” with Jana Kramer

Kramer plays Sam, an interior designer, who returns home during the holidays to help renovate the Bell Harbor Inn. She gets paired with Coop, played by Ryan McPartlin, as her contractor. But the couple have a history. Coop previously broke her heart, and he never got over her.

Sugarland’s Kristian Bush co-wrote and joined Kramer for a song “Second Chances” on the soundtrack.

“Paper Angels” with Jimmy Wayne

The Salvation Army angel tree inspired Wayne to write his song “Paper Angels.” The song inspired a book and a movie, that stars Matthew Settle and Josie Bissett. In the movie, an abused wife takes her children and leaves her alcoholic husband and moves to another town. While there, they meet another family dealing with their own struggles.

"I read the script, and I knew about the paper angels drive with the Salvation Army," Settle told The Tennessean. "My father being a minister, it's similar to what we did growing up. That's touching. I think giving never gets old."

“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” with Dolly Parton

With her “Coat of Many Colors” holiday television series, Dolly Parton is the country music queen of Christmas. In the 1980s, she starred in “A Smoky Mountain Christmas” alongside Lee Majors. But her most recent Christmas venture is for Netflix. “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” stars Parton as an angel who attempts to thaw a scrooge of a woman (Christine Jane Baranski) and restore holiday cheer to a small town.

The movie is now available on Netflix.

"A Smoky Mountain Christmas" with Dolly Parton

Aside from her numerous partnerships with Netflix, A Smoky Mountain Christmas is seen by many fans of the icon as one of her most beloved cinematic moments. Directed by Henry Winkler, it starred Parton and Lee Majors and was originally broadcast on ABC on December 14, 1986. The film's described as a fantasy wherein "a country and western singer on a trip through the Tennessee mountains runs into a reclusive backwoodsman and a witch." "Seven orphans and a country singer [will need] a Christmas miracle to keep them together," says the tagline on the popular, 35-year-old film.

"Trail of Robin Hood" with Roy Rogers

Roy Rogers and a slew of the mid-20th century's greatest western screen stars join the “King of the Cowboys'” horse, Trigger, "The Smartest Horse in the West," in this 1950 film. The plot involves a retired actor who raises Christmas trees for sale, allowing every family to have one. A commercial tree company tries to drive Holt out of business, but the country music icon -- as per usual -- saves the day.

"Finding Christmas" with JT Hodges

On the wave of three consecutive singles charting from his self-titled debut album charting in the top 60 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, performer JT Hodges took his talents to the Hallmark Channel as an actor in 2013. The result was Finding Christmas, a film in which a lovelorn New York advertising executive heads out to an aspiring musician's North Carolina cottage to find a holiday escape. Intriguingly, Hodges still makes occasional appearances via Hallmark, both attached to his film and musical careers.

Hallmark's "A Nashville Christmas Carol"

Hallmark Channel’s 2020-released A Nashville Christmas Carol, features country icons and rising performers alike including Wynonna Judd, Kix Brooks, Sara Evans, and RaeLynn. Wynonna plays a businesswoman's recently deceased mentor who sends her to see the Spirit of Christmas Past (Kix Brooks) and the Spirit of Christmas Present (Brad Paisley's wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley). If looking for a cavalcade of stars with which to spend the holiday season, look no further.

"Christmas at Graceland" with Kellie Pickler

Fifth season of American idol Top-10 finisher Kellie Pickler's country career led her to Hallmark's holiday screens via Memphis-filmed 2018 release Christmas at Graceland. The film's plot involves a Midwestern business executive traveling to Western Tennessee to work with one of the city's oldest family-owned banks. However, she reunites with her long-lost flame, Clay, a local music promoter looking for love.
