Grammy Nominations: Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen and More

The 64th Grammy Awards are set for Jan. 31 in Los Angeles.

Nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards were revealed on Tuesday and Jimmie Allen, Chris Stapleton and Mickey Guyton are among country music's top nominees. Allen, who is up for Best New Artist, is country music's lone all-genre nominee.

Guyton picked up three nominations - including her history-making Best Country Album nod. Guyton is the first Black artist included in the category since its inception. Stapleton mimicked Guyton's nominations, also winning recognition in Best Country Album, Song and Solo Performance categories.

“I was reminded recently of the C. S. Lewis quote, ‘the longest way round is the shortest way home’ and I am home now,” Guyton said in a statement. “I am a living breathing witness that you should never ever give up on yourself. No matter what anyone says, know your worth and trust your gut no matter how many times anyone tries to push you down. I am so incredibly grateful. This is for Breonna. This is for Grayson. This is for my family. This is for women in country music. This is for people of color in country music. We are here. Our stories matter. Our voices matter.”

Kacey Musgraves made headlines recently when members of the Recording Academy banned her 2021 album “Star-Crossed” from the Best Country Album category because members determined the album wasn’t country enough. Musgraves had a star-making moment at the Grammy Awards in 2019 when her “Golden Hour” was named Album of the Year. Her “Star-Crossed” didn’t rise to the same all-genre inclusion, but the project's “Camera Roll” received recognition in Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song.

Similarly, Brandi Carlile’s “Right on Time,” a No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Americana/Folk chart, was prohibited from the American roots song and American roots performance categories and placed in pop. However, her music was celebrated in the reassigned group. Carlile is Seattle-based but records in Nashville and is embraced as part of the community. Carlile was nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Vocal Performance for her song “Right On Time” and Song of the Year for her collaboration with Alicia Keys on “A Beautiful Noise.”

The shuffling comes as the Recording Academy abolished nomination revue committees for the first time in 30 years. More than 21,000 voters weighed in on the nods for the 64th Grammy Awards, which will air 8–11:30 p.m. ET Jan. 31 on CBS.

Country music’s other multiple nominees include Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood, who is up for Best Country Duo/Group with Jason Aldean for their “If I Didn’t Love You” and Best Roots Gospel Album for her “My Savior.”

Two of country music’s marquee names – Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson – hopped out of country music and into traditional pop where Nelson’s “That’s Life” and Parton’s “A Holly Dolly Christmas” are both up for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

Here are the nominations of interest to country music/Nashville.
